Eurosport Receives Best Ratings from Australian Open

The newly re-branded Eurosport received its best ratings in the UK over the weekend on the back of the Australian Open Women’s and Men’s Finals on Saturday and Sunday respectively.

Eurosport 1 was the most watched channel in the UK during the men’s final, recording a peak of 1.1 million viewers, breaking the 22 year record that was set during the 1994 Football World Cup.

Since Discovery Communications assumed control back in November 2015, Eurosport has seen its ratings steadily increase culminating with the Australian Open final.

General Manager of Discovery Networks in the UK and Ireland Susanna Dinnage believes this rating signifies improvement in the channel’s ambition and knows there are more positive steps in the right direction.

“The record breaking audience for the Australian Open is a fantastic reflection of a revitalized Eurosport,” she said.

“To break a record that has stood for more than 20 years so soon after Eurosport joined the Discovery family is a signal of our intent to secure the greatest moments in sport exclusively and tell the greatest local stories with more local production”.

If the January event is a sign of what’s to come for Eurosport, it will be a very good year. Not only will it broadcast the French Open, the David Cup and the US Open later in the year, back during the summer Eurosport beat out BBC for the exclusive rights to the 2016 Rio Olympics.
