England the most digitally followed nation at the EUROs

The stocks of English football continue to rise ahead of the EUROs that kick off on 10 June with the Three Lions being easily the most followed team across all social media platforms collectively.

With the data taken from all popular social media platforms including Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Pinterest, LinkedIn, Vine, Google+ and Daily Motion, England registers a tick under 10 million followers (9.94m to be exact).

Coming in second place is Germany who registers 9.05 million followers across its social media platforms while hosts France round out the podium but with almost 1.5 million followers less than the 2014 FIFA World Cup winners (7.55m followers).

When analysing these tables, it’s important to take into consideration mitigating factors such as a number of countries having internal social media networks not widely used by others and that ‘traditional’ social media networks like Facebook and Twitter aren’t as mainstream in some countries as they are in others.

However, it does show that England has effectively managed to unite and channel its marketing properties through the appropriate platforms to extract ‘digital’ support.

Interestingly, the ‘digital’ popularity of the international sides don’t come even close to the popularity of some domestic teams with Real Madrid’s Facebook page alone having double the likes of all 24 sides in the EUROs put together.
