Chelsea’s new Instagram hit, and the importance of creativity

Issues around holding the broadcast rights to sporting events can force people to get creative. If you’re unable to show a goal or a touchdown, then use your imagination and your creativity.

And sometimes that can give rise to something that’s just different. Something that’s not just a recreation of a sporting moment borne out of a legal inability to show the real thing, but a video that’s pretty great in its own right.

Over the last few weeks, London football club Chelsea FC seem to have realised that art for art’s sake can be a good enough reason to justify artistic effort in the first place. Especially on social media.

The Chelsea Instagram account has been posting these beautifully crafted recreations of some of Chelsea’s best goals so far this season, dotted in once a week amongst their usual array of behind the scenes photos and videos.

They’re not a new idea – others have done it before to get around copyright issues – but they create something shareable that fans love! The lesson on social is to always be creative.
