Charlotte Hornets host 90s Nickelodeon themed night

In a move that may become quite common as clubs look to engage more one to one with fans, NBA’s Charlotte Hornets threw it back to the 90s on Tuesday with a Nickelodeon themed game.

Time Warner Arena was full of nostalgia during the evening with the night featuring appearances from Kel Mitchell of the very popular Keenan and Kel series, Rugrats characters, Olmec’s head from Legends of the Hidden Temple and the host podium from Double Dare which was played at half time.

As part of the themed night, the Hornets sold Nickelodeon themed merchandise in the team store and its social media posts from its official account follower the Nickelodeon theme as well. A few fans even had the honour of getting slimed.

In 2002, the Hornets moved from Charlotte to New Orleans and were re-branded as the Bobcats. However, the New Orleans Hornets then changed its name to the Pelicans at the start of the 2013 season which enabled Charlotte to once again become the Hornets.

With the team originally lasting for 14 years between 1988 to 2002, the life of the club spanned the golden era of 90s and, in which time, established very much a cult following. While the team was never a title contender, they were always fun to watch with big personalities like Muggsy Bogues, Dell Curry, Alonzo Mourning and Larry Johnson. Johnson and Bogues even featured in Space Jam, a 90s classic. And it’s not particularly surprising that they would hold a 90s Nickelodeon themed night because of its ties to the era.
