Altice wins exclusive French broadcasting rights to Premier League

Dutch broadcaster Altice has been awarded exclusive broadcasting rights to the Barclays Premier League in France and Monaco as well as non-exclusive rights in Andorra, Luxembourg and Switzerland starting from the beginning of the 2016/2017 season to 2018/2019.

In a coup for the Netherlands-based broadcaster which is owned by French businessman Patrick Drahi, Altice saw off competition from current rights holders Canal Plus in a deal which is thought to be worth approximately €100 million.

Premier League Executive Chairman Richard Scudamore said that Altice was the ideal broadcaster to bring the Premier League to the French fans.

“We are very pleased that Altice has chosen to invest in our broadcasting rights for seasons 2016/17 to 2018/19,” he said.

“Altice has an established track record as a global telecommunications company and we look forward to working with them to deliver high-quality coverage of the Premier League to our many fans in France, and the other territories for which Altice has acquired our rights.”

Canal Plus, which is owned by European media group Viveni, has held the broadcast rights to the Premier League for the past three seasons. But the deal expires at the end of the 2015/2016 season.

The move on the Premier League’s broadcast rights signals a huge offensive by Altice into the football market with their subsidiary partner mobile operate and internet provider Numericable-SFR signing Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo to an endorsement deal that covers several territories, including France.

Altice Entertainment and Sports CEO Nicolas Rotkoff said that the rights to the Premier League was just the next phase of their strategy.

We are extremely pleased and excited to have entered into this new and long-term partnership with the Premier League, the world’s most admired football championship.  This is another big step for Altice’s investment strategy to provide the best in class TV content and broadband packages to its customers across the world.”
